About this course

The training will centre on working with neurodiversity, facilitated by Art Psychotherapist, Natalie Chesterman. The topics to be covered include:

  • The necessity of neurodiversity-informed practice
  • Flexibility in mentalization-based arts psychotherapies
  • Honouring and affirming differences
  • Diversity in the arts
  • Case discussions

Dr Erene Kaptani, Dramatherapist, will introduce body-inclusive methods in MBT, covering topics such as:

  • Being co-present in the here and now
  • Exploring the body and feelings
  • Developing relational mentalizing and movement based interventions
  • Theory and practice in working with gendered and racialised bodies

Structure of the Day

This workshop is designed to be accessible and adaptable to delegates with diverse abilities. There will be several breaks throughout the day, and access to a quiet space will be provided as needed. Suggested reading materials will be sent out prior to the training to give participants ample time to familiarise themselves with the content. Movement tasks will offer options for participation, encouraging attendees to work within their personal limits and explore creative alternatives for engagement. The facilitators will be available throughout the day to support a smooth and individualised learning journey.

Natalie Chesterman is an Art Psychotherapist working with people in NHS Community Adult Mental Health services within secondary care. She has over 10 years experience in delivering Mentalization-based therapy, and over the past seven years, she has been integrating this model with art psychotherapy. She has successfully developed Mentalization-based art psychotherapy programmes (MBAP) within CNWL and beyond and continues to run an MBAP programme in Central London. She has published co-produced research on MBAP, which brought the voices of services users to the forefront. Natalie has many years’ experience in providing art psychotherapy within a Studio approach in which art making is the focus, and has more recently been developing art psychotherapy for Autistic Adults. Natalie has a small private practice providing Clinical Supervision.

Dr Erene Kaptani is an anthropologist, participatory performance artist and Dramatherapist with expertise in participatory performance as a social research method for academic research, community building and public impact. She currently works as community Dramatherapist in the NHS and is training to become an accredited MBT practitioner. She employs narrative and movement-based methods inspired by physical, playback and forum theatre. She has been a member of Playback South Theatre Company and devised performances at Studio Upstairs wellbeing community. She devised Suspended Lives and ‘Me I just put British’ plays about the hostile UK environment with Rich Mix and Tara Arts.
