About this course

A training workshop with Professor James Lock hosted by the CNWL CAMHS Training Academy.

In this training you will learn how to address the principle maintaining behaviors related to lack of interest or appetite, extreme sensory sensitivities to food, and fear of physical repercussions of eating (e.g. pain, vomiting, allergic reactions), as well as a breakdown of the key interventions in FBT-ARFID. The training will touch on medical and nutritional support and psychiatric symptoms that are comorbid with this disorder and will finish with a range of case histories demonstrating how FBT-ARFID is implemented in a clinical and real-world settings. Delegates should be familiar with the principles of FBT used in other eating disorders.  

Ideal for clinical practitioners who treat children and adolescents with eating disorders, specifically, psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and allied health practitioners.

Skills You will Learn

1) Participants will understand the rationale and the scientific support for FBT for adolescent ARFID.  

2) Participants will learn the fundamental assumptions of FBT for adolescent ARFID.  

3) Participants will learn the main treatment interventions for each phase of FBT as well as learn how to implement the therapy with different ARFID subtypes.

The trainer

James Lock

James Lock, MD, Ph.D. is Professor of Child Psychiatry and Pediatrics at Stanford University School of Medicine where he also serves as Director of the Eating Disorder Program for Children and Adolescents.

He has published over 200 articles, abstracts, and book chapters, and was recipient of the Academy for Eating Disorders Leadership Award for Research, 2014. He is co-author of Treatment Manual for Anorexia Nervosa: A Family-Based Approach, Help Your Teenager Beat an Eating Disorder, Treating Bulimia in Adolescents: A Family-Based Approach and most recently, Family-Based Treatment for Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder. He has lectured widely in the US, Canada, South America, Europe, and Australia and has been funded by the NIH to conduct treatment research in eating disorders continuously since 1997.
